Dr. Christye Brown, an Atlanta native, is Assistant Professor in the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM). In May 2000, she began her career shortly after graduating from this very program, commissioning as a Lieutenant (junior grade) in the US Navy Medical Service Corps. She served as a healthcare administrator for nine years and her duty stations included Naval Hospital Charleston, Navy Recruiting District Houston, and the National Medical Education and Training Command in Bethesda, Maryland. She earned the rank of Lieutenant Commander prior to resigning her commission to join the US Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps. Christye continued uniformed service at Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research followed by the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury, where she served as Chief, Standards and Doctrine Division in the Education Directorate. In this role she provided guidance and oversight in the development and implementation of mental health initiatives for military families. In 2013, she transitioned back to the Atlanta area to join the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Center for Preparedness and Response. During her eight-year tenure at CDC, she deployed in support of various public health missions for Ebola, Zika, Hurricanes Michael and Maria, and COVID-19. In April 2021, CAPT Brown was selected as one of four Regional Commanders for the new USPHS Ready Reserve Corps, beginning her tenure in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, Office of the Surgeon General. Her final deployment was to Lackland Air Force Base for the Unaccompanied Children’s mission where she served as Planning and Logistics Lead for the embedded USPHS unit. CAPT Brown retired from active duty in March 2023. Dr. Brown teaches coursework in public health disaster and preparedness, health administration, management and policy, and politics in health policy. Dr. Brown is a graduate of Florida A&M University (BS, Biology Education), The Citadel Graduate Program (MBA), and University of Maryland, College Park (PhD, Behavioral and Community Health). She is the mother of two daughters, Kori and Chaise, and one son, Connor, who was a fencer for Atlanta and Nellya Fencers Club.
