Charles started fencing epee competitively at the age of 28 in 1986 with Gene Gettler at the Atlanta Fencers Club. In 2000 he achieved a C rating, which he successfully defended for the next 16 years, finishing in the top 8 in the 2004 Division 2 Nationals. He now coaches and runs footwork classes for younger fencers and fences the occasional recreational foil bout. Other interests include juggling, music, open source software, and beer brewing.
